The Self Help Group (SHG) initiative by Bangladesh Social Service (BSS) has significantly improved the lives of women and their families across Cox’s Bazar, Dinajpur, and Khulna. Thousands of women have gained financial independence, leading to stronger, more resilient households. With increased income from small businesses, families are now able to afford better nutrition, healthcare, and education for their children. The initiative has created confident women leaders who actively participate in local decision-making processes. Communities have become more aware of health, legal rights, and environmental issues, fostering a culture of responsibility and cooperation. SHGs have become safe spaces where women share experiences, support one another, and collectively solve problems. Men in families have started recognizing and respecting women’s contributions, promoting greater gender equality at home. The regular training and financial literacy have helped members make informed financial decisions and avoid debt traps. Through partnerships and linkages, SHGs are accessing wider markets and government services, enhancing long-term sustainability. Overall, the SHG initiative is transforming not just individuals but entire communities towards inclusive, empowered, and equitable development.
